Both the Q5 and Q7 Max Series get very good robot vacuum scores in our tests on floors that are bare and are particularly effective in cleaning pet hair. There are some issues however, which prevent them from being our top choice. One of the flaws of the Q5 is that its navigation system doesn't have AI-powered obstacles avoidance. The only thing it's missing that you can't find in the pricier iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming on bare floors. It's also less effective when it comes to mopping. It relies on disposable wet wipes that don't stick well and aren't able to deal with dried-on debris. It's more expensive than iRobot Combo v9+ or iRobot Roomba j9+ but offers superior suction and an onboard bin that automatically empty into the base. It also supports voice commands via Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It even cleans the floor after it vacuums it, something hasn't been seen in other robot vacuum/mop combos.

3. iRobot Roomba X40

With a sleek, circular design that looks more like a normal Roomba rather than the boxes, this robot vacuum and mop combo is among the most attractive designs in our tests. The latest flagship model from iRobot is also its smartest. It has advanced features such as Enhanced Dirt Detection and future compatibility (another company's robot that is able to wash mop pads in a self-cleaning manner).

It's also the sole robot vacuum/mop that scored the perfect 10/10 out of 10 in our evaluations. This is due to a combination high-tech sensors including a structured light system, a camera, and a variety of lasers. The X40 Ultra is also the only robot we tested that is fully self-refill and empty its base station, and boasts an its own self-cleaning mop pads.

As with other iRobot models as well, the X40 is easy to use, offering an easy mobile app interface and integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, and Google Assistant. The only real drawback is that it's an eerily noisy device which could be a problem if you run it in the morning prior to work, or at night when you try to sleep.

It's also a bit expensive, although it's not as expensive as Ecovacs X2 Omni or Roborock S8 MaxV Ultra Both of which are equally capable and more attractive. If you're willing to live with a bit more noise and some additional cost this is a powerful two-in-one that will delight most.

4. iRobot Roomba L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop with a lot of advanced features to help you get rid of your chores. Like Ecovacs' range-topping X2 Omni and Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra, the L20 is designed to be a hands-free cleaning machine that can take the care of vacuuming and mopping, with a multi-function dock that automatically empty the vacuum's trash bin, refills its water tank, and washes and dry the mop pads.

The smart robot makes use of the combination of LIDAR and structured light to draw out floor plans and identify obstacles, making it more efficient than its top competitors. It also has a front-mounted camera to detect hazards in real-time, although this wasn't quite 100% foolproof during our tests and was often confused by power cords or other obstructions.

Its vacuum has a suction capacity of 7,000 Pascals which is more than enough to finish the job. It also comes with a feature known as "Intelligent Dirt Detection", that regulates the vacuum's power and adjusts cleaning frequency for various areas of the house based on how dirty those areas are.

If you have a larger home, you should consider choosing a model that has spot or zone cleaning mode. This lets you instruct the robot vacuum cleaner best on which part of your home must be cleaned with the help of an app or voice command. If you have a lot of furniture, a stair mode is also a good option. For families that are busy, a recharge feature and resume feature that allows your robot vacuum to pick up where it left off could be extremely useful.

5. iRobot Roomba RX3

The RX3 is more advanced than the price suggests. It is a good vacuum cleaner and was able to remove 55% of debris in our tests. (It was second to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mopses with one pad, which uses a reciprocating motion that is cleaner than the other robot mop cleaners we've examined. And it's highly self-sufficient with a fully-featured app as well as an auto-emptying washable base.

The well-designed iRobot app will guide you through a mapping run that gathers information about your floorplan as well as any "no-go" areas you have marked on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules, or to organize the spot-cleaning. You can also use it to prioritize your dirtiest areas for greater efficiency. The app offers a variety of options, including seasonal suggestions, custom mapping and advanced cleaning settings.
