About Toto

The group Toto was formed in 1976 by guitarists Jeff Porcaro and David Paich (who were also well-known studio musicians who worked with Boz Scaggs at the time) and singer/bassist Bobby Kimball. The name of the group came from the Latin word that translates to "all-encompassing" and was determined to explore every style of music.

The third album by Toto, Turn Back, was an unfulfilling success in 1981. However, they bounced back with their fourth album, Isolation, which contained two hit songs including the title track and Roseanna. The album and the tour made them a household brand all over the world.

After a short hiatus, Toto returns with the album Fahrenheit. It marks a step away from the ballads that were featured on previous albums and includes some heavy rock. This was their first platinum album in North America.

In the course of recording the fifth album, the group loses its manager and is faced with financial problems. They decide to change their name and make a new album using a new producer. The lead singer Fergie Frederiksen leaves the band and is replaced by Joseph Williams, son of legendary film composer John Williams and 1950s actress Barbara Ruick. Joseph is more natural as a frontman than Frederiksen and gives the band a much needed boost.

The band released Mindfields in 1999 and embarks on a huge tour around the world. After a few weeks in Europe the band travels to Japan for sold-out shows. After a brief break, Toto resumes their recording and release their first live album, Absolutely Live in 1993. This includes a cover version of Weezer's song Hash Pipe as a response to the band's performance in Africa during their recent tour. Toto's touring band is rounded out by drummer Lenny Castro, bassist Shannon Forrest and keyboardist Shem von Schroeck.

Following this, the group broke up again. Toto came back together for an event benefiting the ALS Foundation in 2010. to raise funds for the ALS Foundation. This was the first time that all the original Toto members had been performing together for over 31 years. The original members were joined by keyboardist Greg Tambu who filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate who filled in for Shem von Schroeck.

However, the group resumed touring in 2012 following the release of their album 40 Trips Around the Sun.

The album was a return to the band's best form, and the tour that accompanied it featured sold-out shows in North America and Europe. Toto's reunion gained momentum with the return of bassist Shem Von Schroeck and guitarist Steve Lukather.
