Buying a Pram Newborn

Parents and caregivers can depend on prams and pushchairs that can be versatile and multi-functional. They're the co-pilots in the new adventure of your child.

A pram newborn (read article) is designed for infants and newborns. It comes with a an incredibly sturdy, deep carrycot with soft and secure walls.

A pram typically comes with a bassinet. However, it can be transformed into a stroller seat when baby is ready.

Safety

Newborns need to be secured to the greatest extent possible. A pram or stroller that has safety features will ensure that your baby is secure and comfortable while traveling. A stroller or pram must include a break that is working and a 5-point harness (2 shoulder straps; 2 waist straps; and the crotch belt) and a wrist tether for the person driving it. Check that your chosen pram is in compliance with these requirements before you purchase.

Find a pram which allows your baby to ride in the recommended lying-flat position. This position supports the baby and prevents the risk of a dangerous curve in the spine which can cause spinal problems. By keeping the airways open, it lowers the risk for SUID (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome or Asphyxiation). The majority of prams that can be used from birth will include the seat unit, which will recline into a lie-flat pram mode for younger babies and then transform into a pushchair unit for older children.

Having the option of lie flat seating is an absolute must for newborns, as it promotes better back and lung development. Many prams have cocoons or carrycots that creates a cosy, nest-like environment for your newborn and can be easily detached from the frame. Others, like the egg2's bucket-style seat, do not recline to lay flat, but offer a comfortable ride for your baby.

Some prams include a separate seat or bassinet for a newborn. This allows you to effortlessly switch between sitting and sleeping positions based on what your baby needs. It is often described as a "travel pushchair system" and is the initial configuration that you should try out with your newborn.

Find a pram that has two shoulder straps, ideally padded and a five-point security harness. It must fit your child's body perfectly. Be sure to check for gaps, or loose areas where fingers can get caught. Also make sure the buckles are simple for older children to operate. Also, think about if you would like an adult-facing running pram. It is great to keep an eye on your child and helps them feel more secure by being able to see their parents.

Another feature you may want to look out for is the possibility of raising and lowering your newborn's seat from a low to high setting, which allows you to maintain eye contact with them and keeps them close to you. Make sure that your pram newborn has a solid base and wheels that are able to handle potholes and bumps. Also, make sure you can fold it up easily, and check that the safety harness is functional, fits comfortably and securely (five-point instead of three-point) and can be adjusted as your child grows. You should also be able to keep changing and shopping bags in the basket underneath (although remember that putting on too much weight can cause it to tip over).
