Bedside Crib and Travel Cot

Bedside cribs resemble the bassinet that is connected to the side of the bed. They usually come with a side that can be put down to make it easier to reach and some come with an incline that's ideal for babies who have reflux.

MFM tester Georgina found the crib to be easy to build and the instructions were simple, resulting in an easy and quick build. It folds down to a compact size, and comes with a convenient travel bag.

Easy to put together

Bedside cribs are generally easy to put together, and are usually on the smaller side, so they fit neatly alongside your bed. They are also lighter, making them more portable. Georgina, who was one of the MFM's home testers said that the Maxi-Cosi Lora was "super easy to put together, with clear instructions, and simple zips." The crib can also be used as a travel cot and comes with a convenient bag to carry it around moving. It comes with multiple mesh openings for ventilation and its height-adjustable allows it to fit on any mattress.

Some cribs with a bedside feature the option of a side panel that can be removed to allow you to easily reach your baby without stepping out of bed. This is a great solution for breastfeeding mums or parents who want to be close to their child throughout the night, but don't want to be at risk of co-sleeping (which is associated to an increased risk of SIDS).

Many models come with a built-in rocking function. This can be a very relaxing experience for your baby and help them to fall asleep. Some cribs can recline in a position, which can be useful for babies suffering from reflux or colic. This position is best used under supervision and you should consult a doctor or health visitor prior to attempting it.

You can monitor your child from the in the comfort of your bed using the small bedside cot crib. It's a great option for mothers who are recovering from a C-section since you can easily lift your infant towards you to feed them at the night or change their nappies without getting out of the bed. And the cosiest cribs also have breathable mesh sides which you can see your baby through.

Some cribs let you lower the barrier completely. This lets you co-sleep with no risk. (Make sure that the crib you choose is compliant with the current safety requirements). It's also extremely easy to assemble - Georgina who took part in our MFM tests assembled it quickly and didn't even need to read the instructions. It's also a great travel cot, folding down flat before slipping into a convenient bag.

The Next2me Magic, which was shortlisted for the Best Cot, Crib or Moses Basket at the 2021 Mother&Baby Awards, is also somewhat larger, however it is still compact and easy to fit into your bed. Georgina also found it easy to assemble, though she felt the instructions could have been clearer regarding the zips.

Easy to clean

Look for cribs that come with mattress covers that can be washed in the machine when you are looking at cribs for bed or travel cots. This will keep it clean and free of spills, spit-up, and leaky diapers. You should also select a model that is easily disassembled, allowing you to clean and sanitise every nook and cranny.

This is essential, as it will ensure that all dirt and germs have been cleared away. Make sure that the sides of the crib are securely secured so that your baby cannot slide off or become trapped.

In addition to being easy to clean, you'll need a crib for your bed that is a comfortable place for your baby and will fit comfortably into your own bed. This is particularly crucial if you're using a bedside crib for co-sleeping. Some cribs will also convert into a travel cot or include additional features such as tilting, rocking (use with caution, remember to speak to your GP about this) or even turning into an older baby cot or playpen.
