The GE PGE29BYTFS Smart Refrigerator includes the all the features you'd expect from a refrigerator at this price, including Wi-Fi and app support via GE's SmartHQ software. The app, available for iOS and Android devices, lets you control your fridge from anywhere in the world, and offers many options for customizing. It also sends you notifications when the door is unlocked, when the freezer or fridge must be defrosted and when the filter has to be changed.

It would be nice if the GE PYE22PYNFS included Precise fill, an option available in other GE fridges that allows you to set the number of cups of water you'd like to disperse at once. The fridge displays a countdown timer to reveal how much water remains however it's not as helpful as Precise Fill.

Bosch Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

It is designed to look like a seamless part of your kitchen, Bosch's French-door refrigerator is an eye-catching piece. The fridge uses fingerprint-resistant stainless steel, which is a great feature for busy households. It also has a vegetable compartment that keeps fruits and vegetables fresher for longer and two compressors for preserving food. The ice maker we tested was one of the most efficient, and it produces the shape of a pyramid using only water. This fridge is perfect for a single household or kitchenette that needs a built-in appearance and top-of-the line food preservation.

This refrigerator was rated as the top in our Refrigerators Test for a variety of reasons. Its freezer temperatures held firm at just above 0 degrees Fahrenheit, never moving by more than a fraction an inch. This is essential to avoiding freezer burn. The top shelf on the right side can be folded in order to create more space for tall items. There's also a full-width deli drawer and an internal water dispenser.

One of the best aspects of this refrigerator is that its ice maker is in the freezer, making it easy to move the ice to the refrigerator to be used when it is needed. The freezer has thoughtful design elements, too, like sliding drawers to help you to organize the place of items. It also has a large container to store frozen food items, and a separate one for ice.

Another cool feature of this refrigerator is its Smart InstaView panel. You can manage the temperature, lighting and other aspects of your fridge using your smartphone. It's a simple way to keep track of your refrigerator and manage it, particularly when you're not at home.

But while the Smart InstaView is a neat feature, it does not necessarily add to the overall performance of the refrigerator. The refrigerator took longer to chill food and defrost it than some others we test. This is likely due to the larger capacity.

The other issue we have with the doors of this refrigerator. They have sunken handles at the front, which allows smaller people to pull them open from the bottom, but they're still difficult for taller people to steer closed without slamming the doors. It would have been much better if these had front-mounted handles.

You can also use this to adjust the general cooling settings for the entire fridge, but I've noticed that adjusting the general settings tends produce better results than specific ones.

During my tests, the temperature of the refrigerator were fairly constant across the different areas of the refrigerator. Temperatures in the top and bottom of the fridge didn't stray significantly from 38 degrees, and the middle of the fridge was within one degree of 36. That's a good performance however it doesn't be among the top in our rankings.
