Item upgrading allows players to upgrade their weapons and gear with new affixes, increasing the base stats of the item or adding additional perks. To upgrade an item, the player needs to have it in their inventory as well as access to the kiln.

Upgrade components

Leveling

Path of Exile's upgrade system differs from previous versions in several important ways. Gear is now classified into tracks and each item can be upgraded so many times before it's "leveled out." The cost of upgrading increases with each level up, but the required materials don't increase as much. This allows players to concentrate their efforts on a specific few items and maximize the effect of those items rather than spreading the cost of upgrades across several pieces.

This will allow the item to receive upgraded components, and have a greater chance of success. This bonus is known as the Artisan's Energy and it will reset to zero after failure or increases if the upgrade succeeds.

After a piece has been upgraded to its highest level, it can receive the affixes needed to enhance its abilities. The number of affixes available will depend on the type of item it is. For instance an uncommon or rare weapon with a normal base will only have two affixes available for it, while legendary armors will have up to eight affixes available for it.

Each upgrade will require the use of a certain amount of Flightstones and crests to complete depending on the current level of the item and the item upgrades slot it's in. Typically, weapons require more Flightstones to upgrade than other kinds of equipment.

If an item upgrader is not able to reach its max level the NPC will offer the player the option to transfer it to a different character and re-infuse it with a different set of upgrades. This process can take up to two hours and will cost the same amount of material but will have less chance of success.
