WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades give you boost in specific statistics. Each upgrade item boosts the level of an item by 3. A random substat is also added to each upgrade item.

The upgraded gear is usually more useful, unless the item has low requirements by nature (like FB sorc shields) or has a high variance in stats (like Eth Titan weapons). The latter see less value from upgrading due to the requirement to roll for a perfect model.

Recycle Points

The upgrader for items allows players to upgrade their gear to a higher level by supplying the appropriate currency to the NPC. Upgrades can be made on any kind of weapon or armor. The item used to upgrade the item will be consumed and can't be used again. Upgrades can be used to create enchantments.

You can upgrade your gear anytime by visiting the upgrader in any major city. It is recommended that you visit the upgrader once every few weeks to ensure that your equipment is up to date.

The cost of upgrading will be based on the current item level of the item being upgraded but they will always be cheaper than purchasing new equipment from other sources. For instance upgrading a Benthic chest to 385 levels will cost 20 recycle points purchasing a similar piece from another player will costs 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are useful items that are used to level up weapons and tools, armor and other items. They can be bought by players through NPCs who sell upgrades for items in exchange for different currencies, and can be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade is able to be applied to any tool, weapon or armor. The button will show the item's next level of upgrade, if there are enough materials.

The cost of upgrades varies based on the slot of the item and the current level of the item, with weapons costing more than bracers or gloves, for instance. Each upgrade cost 15 Flightstones and a variety of crests, with certain upgrades offering discounts to lower the cost of Flightstones or crests that are used. After an item has been upgraded to a certain degree and is degraded, it can be sold and sold back to the upgrader for a lesser amount of both currencies.

A lot of locations offer upgraders for items which include the main island and a few outposts. The NPCs offer both an upgrade discount and a chance to get a brand new upgrade recipe. The discount for upgrades increases according to the number of items that are being upgraded. It is also possible to be increased by having players complete specific achievements or quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an item upgrader at start, unlike Cromwell from Baldur's gate II. The NPCs who are able to facilitate upgrades are available only through a variety means. This is both a benefit and a disadvantage.

In Season 3, the upgrade system has been altered a bit, with some new features added. After a player has earned an upgrade to a specific Item level Upgrade level for a particular armor slot, upgrading additional items to that level will be less expensive, even if they belong to another set of gear.

The discount is applicable to all accounts. The amount of Harbinger Crests required to upgrade is cut too, but it is only available when certain milestones are reached.

Crests

Players have several options when it comes to upgrading their equipment in WoW. Flightstones are an item that is available to all players for upgrading. Crests are more specific, and are used during specific item level upgrades. Crests are an essential part of the Dragonflight gear progression system that was introduced in 10.1, and come in 4 ranks.

The first thing to note is that crests are only able to be used on gear of a specific rank, and each rank has different requirements for upgrading. The easiest and most straightforward upgrade costs 15 crests. The most complex upgrade requires up to 20 crests, depending on the type or equipment that is being upgraded.

Players can earn crests by finishing content at the appropriate level, whether that involves walking around and performing outdoor activities for gear of lower tiers, raids or dungeons with all difficulties for higher-tier items, or Mythic+ dungeons or heroic raid bosses to obtain endgame gear. Crests can be exchanged at an item upgrader NPC like Cuzolth in Dornogal or Vaskarn in Valdrakken, for the appropriate upgrade pathways and steps.

The new currency system isn't difficult to use, however it brings some changes to the process of upgrading. For instance, when a piece of equipment reaches the highest upgrade item level of any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic) it won't require Flightstones to be upgraded. This is to allow players to upgrade their equipment up to the highest ilvl possible on all their characters, rather than relying solely on seasonal loot.

Another important change is that crests only have one use and it's crucial to use them properly. For instance, it's a good idea make use of all your Whelpling-rank crests on the best equipment available, and then keep Drake and Wyrm crests for the next round of upgrades you're planning to create. This is especially applicable to rings and trinkets that fill multiple slots on the character that will be able to benefit from the account-wide discount when all of the slots are full of high-quality equipment.
